Welcome To The World: Week 1 Homework

Here is the first post.

Please respond to the following:

In a recent interview, journalist Robert Levine, author of Free Ride , responded to the anti-S.O.P.A. crowd by saying this:

Free speech is very important in the U.S. It’s a more important value than copyright. In most countries it is. But there’s an argument on the other side. There’s a great quote by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor that says: “The Framers intended copyright itself to be the engine of free expression. By establishing the marketable right to the use of one’s expression, copyright supplies an economic incentive to create and disseminate.” That’s a pretty powerful argument on the other side.

Respond to the quote in your own words. What does it mean? Do you agree or disagree?

  1. The quote means that some people believe that free speech is very important while others oppose to the idea of free speech. I agree that free speech is very important in the United States. With free speech the United States became a democracy.

  2. This quote means that the people who copyright are taking credit for other people's words and thoughts. Because of them doing this, they are able to basically "plagiarize" whatever they would like. I agree that this isn't okay, however if they are going to take someone else's work and such, they should state that they do not own the content, then of course I disagree with what O'Conner says.

  3. I totally do not agree with the first part of the quote which is "The Framers intended copyright itself to be the engine of free expression." How can a farmer be the engine of free speech if he supports copyright? Those are two opposite things. If he wants free speech then he needs to oppose copyright!

  4. I think that this qoute means the "framers" are basically basing their freedom of speech off of copyright, they want copyright to be the engine of freedom of speech. I disagree totally with the quote that she has said. I think that there may be people out there that do base their freedom of speech off of copyright, and they want the copyright to be the engine of freedom of speech. However she should learn not to speak out of term, becaus emany people may do this howevr many people do not do this, therefore I disagree!

  5. I think this means the people are taking credit of some else's work as an there not doing anything. This is why they are saying free speech is more important which is true because everyone has there own opinion about there own ideas. i agree because its unfair for other's, & that's why it stated there are "farmers", the lady the wrote this quote everything i disagree own on.. i disagree

  6. i believe this means that copyright was intended to let other people use others words in their own. I don't agree with this because if we were to use someone else's words we should tell our readers that they aren't ours. copyright was intended for people to steal their words, it was created when we started to use others words as our own.

  8. This quote means that people were allowed to use othes people's words as their own. I don't agree with this because this is giving us the answer and we are not learning anything. This copywright is not a good thing and it wants us to steal people's word when it is not prohibited anymore.

  9. The author of free ridce is basically saying that the SOPA act will only take away freedom. It is trying to stop piracy, but it will also put a damper on being able to oppenly view things that are on the internet. I agree with what he is saying.

  10. to me this quote basically means people have different outlooks on different things. so people believe that free speech is more important than copy right and vise versa and i kinda agree and disagree bc there are valid points and then i think that people have the freedom to believe in whatever they feel is correct

  11. This quote means to me that people believe that free speech can be more important than copy right. Many people believe that free speech should be aloud in the U.S.A but there are always opposite people. I agree with free speech because we live in a democratic country.

  12. To be honest i believe this quote is just comparing the S.O.P.A and copy right. The quote just states that S.O.P.A is protecting freedom of speech. On the other hand so does copy right protects the freedom of speech. However, i disagree about the quote. Mainly because we can take someones work but at least put the information of where we took it. Only because if we didn't do the work and someone did its fair enough to give them the credit. But then again there is always two sides of the story the S.O.P.A is protecting things but its a bit of dramatic if you think of it.

  13. I think this quote means that copyright was intended to steal other peoples words. I do disagree with this . we shouldn't be a loud to use other peoples words . However there is a side to every story. I believe S.O.P.A is an unfair bill. -Cheryl Ortiz

  14. I believe freedom of speech is very important in the U.S as one of our human rights individuals should be able to demonstrate their rights to speak freely. Copyrights on the other hand is a civil matter which gives exclusivity to one person (pretty much control) for a limited time.

  15. I believe that this means, yes copyrighted things are allowed on the internet but also plagiarizing is wrong, you can copy it but make sure you use the quotation marks and explain what this means to you. I disagree of people stealing work because it wouldn't be your OWN work , and you still would get the credit.
